MAJOR railways serving the eastern United States, CSX and Norfolk Southern, have started building intermodal hub projects with nearly same amounts invested, but with federal stimulus funds are being poured the Alabama and Tennessee projects.

At Worcester, Massachusetts, CSX said it is spending US$100 million to upgrade its intermodal terminal by adding 23 acres to the existing site, which it says will make the town a major logistics hub for New England.

Norfolk Southern is starting construction on a $97.5 million intermodal hub at McCalla, Alabama., southwest of Birmingham as part of what it called the Crescent Corridor plan that has also won $105 million from a US stimulus spending. Another Norfolk Southern project is under construction outside of Memphis, for which the railway is applying for $52.5 million for each terminal from Washington.
