[311212.EN.SEA] Libyan-Maltese Airline Boss Held In Libya, Charged With Helping Gaddafi

MEDAVIA managing director Abdulrazagh Zmirli was arrested in Zawiyah, Libya, together with technical manager Abdallah Dekna, following claims that they had helped the Gaddafi regime during the 2011 Revolution, reported the Tripoli Post.

Zmirli and Dekna were arrested by anti-militia police at the VIP lounge of the Tripoli International Airport before boarding a flight to Malta.

Medavia began operations in 1979. It was set up to provide oil transportation service in North Africa with its own aircraft fleet and also offers aircraft charter service. It now provides flight operational support, worldwide procurement of aviation fuel, and has representation offices in both Malta and Tripoli.

Mr Zmirli, who reportedly also holds Maltese citizenship, is highly respected by both the Maltese and the Libyan community in Malta. Despite last year's conflict in Libya, he managed to keep Medavia operating.

Medavia is also said to have been instrumental in organising relief operations jointly with the Red Cross to Libya and carried out several evacuation flights with injured people out of Libya during the revolution.

Meanwhile, the Maltese government said they are aware of Mr Zmirli's arrest, and that it is paying close attention to the situation. Reports also said the company's financial general manager, Joe Formosa, said he believed that the charges against the two men were unfounded.
