[271012.EN.SEA] Steering Error To Blame For Collision

Jakarta: A steering error on the part of a ro-ro passenger ferry was to blame for an earlier collision with a LPG carrier owned by IM Skaugen.

Iyan Riswandi, director of shipping and sailor affairs of the Indonesian ministry of transportation, said that initial investigations indicated that when it was imminent that the two vessels were on a collision course, the LPG carrier Norgas Cathinka followed proper avoidance protocol by steering to the right.

The ferry Bahuga Jaya instead of steering to the right as required by procedure, turned to its left, positioning itself in the path of Norgas Cathinka. As a result, Bahuga Jaya sank, killing eight passengers and more than 40 missing. The collision happened on 26 September along Indonesia's Sunda Strait.
