[EN-SEA] "Rotterdam Rules" Win Final 20th Signature From Niger

ROTTERDAM Rules gained its final 20th nation needed, land-locked Niger, that signed the controversial Rotterdam Rules, bringing it closer to becoming the law of the Sea, following the earlier signings of Armenia, Cameroon and Madagascar.

The Rotterdam Rules, or regulations governing the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea, can now come into force, despite opposition of the Europeans Commission and the European Shippers Council (ESC), but mostly favoured by American shipping interests.

According the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) the signatories represent 25 per cent of world trade and include the original nations of Congo, Denmark, France, Gabon, Ghana, Greece, Guinea, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Senegal, Spain, Switzerland, Togo and the United States.
