GHANAIAN officials are "dazed" by the disappearance of more than 20 German and Japanese cars loaded in 10 forty-footers at Tema Harbour, evidently scooted off the docks to evade overstaying fines and customs duties.
The vehicles vanished into thin air, reported the Ghanaian Democrat newspaper, which added that law enforcement agents have faced death threats pursuing the investigation.
According to information received from "impeccable sources" at the Tema Harbour, 15 miles east of the capital Accra, the missing cars had been left in their boxes at the port for more than a year.
They had been impounded for over-staying more than 60 days, and were to be auctioned off if the owners did not come forward and pay the fines and duties. Ahead of the auction, the containers were opened by officials, who were shocked to find them empty even though the seals were intact.
Some containers held an old spare tyre, a beer cooler and stale doughnuts crusts. The official consignee, known as Yaw Sarfo Brobbey, of Post Office Box Number 9649, Kumasi, had the vehicles sent to him, but he was no where to be found.
Vehicle types were Porsche Cayon, Lexus RX 350, Mercedes Benz, Honda Accord, Honda Infiniti, Toyota Corolla and Toyota Camry.
